The Details

2020 GOLFBRAAI PROGRAM GARDEN ROUTE

The inaugural GOLFBRAAI ™ Event will take place from Wednesday 29th April to Sunday 3rd May 2020 at the renowned Simola Hotel, Country Club & Spa in Knysna.  This world-famous Garden Route town is one of the most picturesque and frequently visited tourist destinations in South Africa, with the Par 72 Jack Nicklaus signature golf course offering numerous scenic views over Knysna from atop the Golf Estate.  An ideal GOLFBRAAI ™ destination.

Teams

The 2020 GOLFBRAAI ™ Event can accommodate 25 Teams.  All competing Teams must consist out of four (4) Team Members and your “Team Representative / Contact Person” must complete the online entry form indicating your Team’s Name, and also appoint a nominated Golf Captain and Braai Captain to represent their four (4) man Team.  Both Captains have key roles once at the Event.  GOLFBRAAI (PTY) LTD will then correspond all the relevant Team and Event information via your Team Representative / Contact Person to ensure a successful Team experience before and during the 2020 Event.

Golf Handicaps

Your Team Representative / Contact Person will be required to submit each competitor’s golf SA Player ID, the 27… number on your Handicap Card.  All players will enter using their official Handicap Index, and our score capture program will then calculate your Course Handicap on the morning of play.  Competitors with an unofficial golf handicap, not a member of a Golf Club, will compete from a Handicap Index of 18.0, or from their last known official golf handicap (subject to a final decision from the Tournament Committee).

Accommodation

All competing Teams will be accommodated at the 5-Star Simola Hotel, with each Team Member receiving his own room.  Partners are more than welcome, and a separate program package is on offer to accommodate them.  View costing later in this program.

All Teams arriving prior to Wednesday 29th April or departing after Sunday 3rd May must please contact Erica Valentyn (Operations Director) at GOLFBRAAI (PTY) LTD on Cell: 082 883 2009 or Email:  erica@golfbraai.co.za to secure additional accommodation.  Preferred rates are available subject to availability.

Travelling

All participants are requested to make their own travel arrangements to and from Simola Hotel, Country Club & Spa in Knysna.  For participants flying into George Airport, (1) a shuttle service will be available at a nominal fee, or (2) a rental vehicle or kombi can be booked at preferred rates via our Travel and Logistics’ Partner, Golf In Heaven (PTY) LTD.  Any such rental vehicle or combi bookings will be for your own account.  Please contact Erica Valentyn (Operations Director) on Cell: 082 883 2009 or Email: erica@golfbraai.co.za for any bookings. 

Lastly, please note that during the 2020 GOLFBRAAI ™ Event, a return shuttle service will transport all participating Teams from the Simola Hotel to the Estate’s River Club, where the two (2) Braai Competitions will take place on Thursday 30th April and Saturday 2nd May.  All participants will be required to sign the Event Waiver and Indemnity Form.

Parking

Designated parking areas have been allocated for competing Teams and GOLFBRAAI (PTY) LTD employees and temporary staff.  Vehicles are parked at your own risk, but this 5-Star Security Golf Estate is more than equipped to keep everything safe and under control.

Bar and live entertainment

The Simola Hotel, Country Club & Spa’s cash bar facilities will be available for the duration of the 2020 GOLFBRAAI ™ Event.  Numerous bar specials will also be on offer across the various bar venues within the Simola Country Estate.  Free Beer and Wine will be supplied during selected periods of the Event.  Free Spirits and Mixers will also be supplied during selected happy hour periods of the Event.

Live Music performances will be held at the Opening Function and at the 2 x Braai Competitions at the River Club.  Over and above the live entertainment provided, the resident GOLFBRAAI ™ DJ’s will also provide for non-stop music during the Event.  This wide variety of music will start at breakfast, continue through lunch and will only stop playing once the evening functions are done.  Now, that is something to look forward to.

Additional Golf Rounds

The below program and itinerary include 54-Holes of Golf over three (3) days at Simola Country Club.  Should participating Teams which to play additional rounds of golf on Wednesday 29th April and / or on Sunday 3rd May, please contact Erica Valentyn (Operations Director) on Cell: 082 883 2009 or Email: erica@golfbraai.co.za for any bookings.  Preferred rates are available on both these days, subject to availability.

Registration

Registration for the 2020 GOLFBRAAI ™ Event will take place on Wednesday 29th April in the Forest View Conference Room of Simola Hotel.  This is the first gathering point that you need to be at.  All participating Teams can only register from 12h00 onwards, but you need to please swing by the registration area by no later than 18h00.  The registration process will take around 20-25 minutes as you work your way receiving your Team clothing, braai items, gifts etc… In other words, arrive early and you will have more free time in the afternoon to relax and enjoy the surroundings before the Opening Function starts at 19h00.  Only once registered, Teams can go and check-in at the Simola Hotel’s reception.

Entry Fee

The entry fee cost for the 2020 GOLFBRAAI ™ Event is R 12 500 per person (R 50 K per Team of four people) and this amount is non-refundable.  We can only accommodate 25 Teams, and entries must be submitted by completing the online entry form.  Any person, corporates and/or teams can enter with entries working on a first come, first served basis.

Entries close on Friday 28th February 2020.

Shuttle service starts from Hotel to Simola’s River Club (Travel time 10 min).  Teams must collect their food items from the onsite pantry and be setup for Braai Competition by 18h00.

Very Important

The above list of “what is included” has more than likely sparked some questions and it is perhaps at this point that you should make some notes and ask the GOLFBRAAI ™ Team.  Let me start by highlighting some of the important logistics relating to the above.

Simola Hotel and Country Club will supply all the various glasses, plates, knives, steak knives, spoons and forks required per Team Braai at the Braai-Zone and River Club.

GOLFBRAAI (PTY) LTD will supply each competing Team with a portable braai unit, fold up table, tablecloth and 3 x 3m gazebo for their allocated Braai stand(s) at the Braai-Zone and River Club.  Each Team will use these items for the duration of the 2020 GOLFBRAAI ™ Event.  GOLFBRAAI (PTY) LTD will ensure that the above items as listed are always setup and cleaned ahead of each Braai. 

Braai Captain

It is the responsibility of the “Braai Captain” to ensure he brings along his 80L rough tote box pack with his Teams’ “Braai Goods” as received at registration.  In the spirit of this event / competition, each Team must wash these items required for every Braai.  We are talking about your cutting knives and boards, tongs, casseroles and grid.  We again emphasize that Simola Hotel will supply all the various glasses, plates, knives, steak knives, spoons and forks required per Team Braai.  They will also wash these items and will have them ready for the next Braai.  

Also note that some Event Partners and Sponsors might decide to handout other and / or alternative gifting at registration over and above what GOLFBRAAI ™ commit to give you and feel you need during the Event.  This must be seen as a generosity and a “nice to have” in addition to what GOLFBRAAI ™ offers.

Golf Formats

GOLF FORMATS
Some exciting golf formats will be used during the 2020 GOLFBRAAI ™ Event.  Herewith an explanation on how these various formats work:

Money Ball:
Money Ball is a familiar format that is known by many different names, including Yellow Ball and Pink Ball.  Whatever you call it, it puts the onus on one player per team per hole to come through with a good score.  Players in a group of four play off their course handicaps and rotate playing the “Money Ball.”  On each hole, the stableford score of the golfer whose turn it is to play the Money Ball is combined with the low stableford score from among the other three team members to form the team score.

Best Ball:
In a Best Ball tournament, all 4 members compete of their course handicap and play their own balls on each hole.  At the completion of the hole, the lowest stableford score among all team members serves as the team score.  If there are four members on a team, and on the first hole those four golfers score 4-3, 7-0, 6-1 and 5-2, the team score is 4-3, because that is the best ball among the four players.

Texas Scramble:
In “Scramble” all members of the team – 4 players – tee off.  Then one of these drives is chosen to be used for the next shot and all members of the team place their balls within a club length from where the chosen drive ended up, and all the team play a second shot from this spot.  From these second shots, one is chosen, and all play a third shot from there – and so on until the ball is holed.  Each team returns one score for each hole and the team with the lowest score for the round wins. 

To calculate your teams handicap, add all 4 players course handicap together and divide the team’s total handicap number by 8.  Round this number up or down mathematically.

What is the difference between a Scramble and a Texas Scramble?  It’s the driving requirement!  In a Texas Scramble, the same basic Scramble rules as explained above will apply, but each team member must also contribute at least four drives throughout the round.  What that means is that during the 18-hole round, the team must select at least four of Player A’s drives as the team’s drive, it must use at least four of Player B’s drives as the team drive, and so on with Player C and Player D.  The good news is that the team does not have to decide which player’s drive it is using on a given hole until after each drive has been played. 

Partner Packages

As indicated under accommodation in the GOLFBRAAI program, Partners and Spouses are more than welcome, and a separate program package is on offer for these non-participants.  The purpose of this package is for the Partner to also experience the various offerings that Simola and Knysna have, without the burden of attending the main GOLFBRAAI ™ Event, every step of the way.  Partners can rather relax and enjoy the comfort that is Simola Hotel.

The cost per “Partner Package” is R 7 500 and this amount is non-refundable.  These packages are available on a first come, first served basis and must be booked directly with Erica Valentyn (Operations Director).  Refer to her contact details in below paragraph.

What to pack

After highlighting important logistics and indicating what each Team will receive, let GOLFBRAAI ™ also list what important items must be packed by participants.  We promise this will make your life easier once at the Event.

*No ATM facilities are available at Simola Hotel or on the Estate.  We recommend that you bring enough cash, as each room is equipped with an electronic safe.  Further note that no room accounts will be available during the 2020 GOLFBRAAI ™ Event.  However, Swipe Card facilities are available throughout Simola Hotel, Country Club and Spa and all participants will be required to pay per transaction*.

Dietary Requirements

Breakfast, Lunch and Supper is included in your entry fee cost and will be supplied each day of the Event.  All other Food items, plus Free coffee, juice and water will be supplied.  Kindly indicate if you have any special “dietary requirements” within your Team.  We will endeavour to accommodate your request to the best of our ability. 

Note that these “dietary requirements” includes being “Halaal, Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free” etc…not your Team requesting that they only eat thick red meat, and not lamb or chicken (hee-hee).  We trust you understand the point being made.

EXEMPTION OF LIABILITY

GOLFBRAAI (PTY) LTD, all its employees, temporary staff, the Simola Hotel, Country Club & Spa and their management, and all GOLFBRAAI ™ Event Sponsors & Partners will not be held responsible for any damages, loss, including; Personal loss and or other forms of loss, harm or injury sustained as stipulated below:

  • Physical and / or emotional injuries suffered during the Event, due to any acts of God, suffered as a direct result thereof, including aspects such as being struck by lightning, etc.
  • Physical injuries of any kind suffered by any person, including a player or spectator sustained by own negligence, or otherwise.
  • Emotional injuries sustained due to any loss, including death, suffered because of any of the above injuries sustained personally or by a spectator.
  • Damages suffered to any property of a player.
  • The player acknowledges and agrees to the exemption of liability of GOLFBRAAI (PTY) LTD and its management as listed above when he enters the Event. He also acknowledges the contents of the above, he understands it, and exempts GOLFBRAAI (PTY) LTD, all its employees, temporary staff, the Simola Hotel, Country Club & Spa and their management, and all GOLFBRAAI ™ Event Sponsors & Partners from any liability as indicated above.
EVENT WAIVER AND INDEMNITY FORM

All participants will also be required to sign the 2020 GOLFBRAAI ™ Event “Waiver and Indemnity Forms” prior to the start of the event.  In broad terms, this is an agreement with you that limits liability under certain circumstances for loss, damage or injury you may suffer arising from your participation in the event.  These documents are also an acknowledgement, self-declaration and undertaking to be responsible.  Both documents will be sent to each participating Team with their Tax Invoice and MUST be signed before your arrival at Simola.  Should this not happen, the signing of these documents will be made compulsory at Registration on Wednesday 29th April 2020, in order for participants to partake in the Event.

MEDICAL EMERGENGIES

A detailed list of emergency numbers will be supplied to all participating Team Members at Registration on Wednesday 29th April.  In addition to the entry form and details listed in the GOLFBRAAI program, GOLFBRAAI (PTY) LTD will also require a copy of each participants “Medical Aid Card” (if available).

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Due to the nature of the GOLFBRAAI ™ Event, GOLFBRAAI (PTY) LTD hereby confirm that we will take every reasonable precaution to conduct all activities related to fire, the use thereof, whether recreational or in any other form, in a responsible and environmentally conscious manner. Every possible precaution will be made to prevent damage to property and / or the immediate environment in which this event will take place, and fires may only be lit in designated areas.  All participants of GOLFBRAAI ™ will agree to adhere to fire safety standards and regulations as stipulated in the bylaws of The Knysna Municipality and Simola Hotel, Country Club and Spa.
